3.2a Year 2 Registration - Transfer Students

Transfer Students

We are excited that you have decided to join the school of Biomedical Engineering. Students will receive their Transfer Notification Email around 1 week before the Year 2 registration slots open. Please be patient, as our office also receives this notice on the same day as you.

This page provides information that is only applicable for transfer students.

ASSESSING YOUR TRANSFER CREDITS

Normally, most students who transfer to the BMEG program will need an Assessment of Transfer Credit document, which is prepared by the Engineering Academic Services (EAS) staff. Students can request this document here. (click "General Transfer Credit Information" and scroll down to the bottom of the page, click "Request for Assessment of Transfer Credit" to submit the request).

If you are transferring from a UBC Engineering Program and your Academic Progress Report in Workday is up-to-date, you may not need this document. However, if any of your credits are unclear (i.e. "MATH 1st year" instead of a specific MATH course) we need the assessment document.

The Assessment of Transfer Credit document would be very helpful for course planning purposes, so it would be great if we have it when we do course planning with you. Here's an example of what that document looks like (table 1):

HOW TO CHECK FOR MISSING YEAR 1 COURSES USING YOUR "ASSESSMENT OF TRANSFER CREDITS"

A) Please consult the "Requirement Met" column, to verify which courses you've been granted credits. In the example above, the student does not have CHEM 121 nor CHEM 123 (specific notes will be placed on the "Outcome of Request" column).

B) Check if you have APSC 101 credits:

        • Yes: No further action (this is accepted in lieu of BMEG 101).
        • No: Please register for BMEG 101 - offered in winter term 2 (Jan to Apr).

C) Check if you have PHYS 159 credits:

        • No: Please register for BMEG 102  - offered in winter term 2  (Jan to Apr).
        • Yes: please register for BMEG 200  - offered online in summer term 2 (Jul to Aug). This online bridge course will make up the 1 credit you're missing from PHYS 159. Students should register for the waitlist as soon as they are placed in BMEG, and our office will register you later.

D) Check if you have CHEM 121 & CHEM 123 credits:

        • If you do not have transfer credits for this Chemistry courses, you will be required to register for them before Year 3, usually in the summer after Year 2. Please refer to Module 3.3B CHEM 121 + CHEM 123 for more details.

REGISTERING FOR YEAR 2 COURSES

It may take from 6 to 8 weeks for EAS to provide you with an Assessment of Transfer Credit. Therefore, please do not wait until you receive this document to register for courses - by this time, most seats will have been taken.

      • Plan ahead: become familiar with our Year 2 course curriculum and its pre-requisites. If you are missing the pre-req, register for it!

Example: BMEG 210 requires PHYS 157. If you don't have this course, you should register for it (as you will not be allowed to take BMEG 210 until you've fulfilled its pre-requisite) .

      • Create multiple "worklists" to include courses you are sure you have pre-requisites for, and other "worklists" assuming you won't get credit for certain courses. Depending on where you are transferring from, the credit may not be accepted for a Year 1 course (as it would not cover the material taught in that particular course). By having multiple "worklists", you'll be prepared to register in the courses you need, depending on whether or not you've met the pre-reqs.
      • Add your Registration Date / Time to your calendar, so you don't forget to register! (Students will be notified of their registration opening date and time 2 weeks before registration opens). Register immediately, as sections will fill up. If the course is full, register for the waitlist. (please read Module 3 for instructions)
      • If you have not received an answer to a question before the time of your registration, please register in every course that you are able, including waitlists. (It is better to register for courses and drop them later when granted transfer credits, than to wait and not able to find seats for the courses later) .
      • Important: We cannot add students into sections that are full and we cannot register students into non-BMEG courses - please contact the respective department if you encounter registration issues with a particular non-BMEG course.
      • You may register / unregister for courses until the add/drop deadline.

CONTACTING SBME STUDENT SERVICES

      • Students can contact us for a number of reasons, i.e.: not being able to register into the full Year 2 course load (due to missing pre-reqs); wanting to reduce their course load; planning to do a co-op and worried about program delays, etc.
      • You are always welcome to contact the SBME Student Services at students@sbme.ubc.ca. Please include your student number, and have your summary of transfer credits ready, so we can better assist you.

USEFUL LINKS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS:

General Transfer Student Registration information (Refer to the BMEG specific sub-menu).

APSC 100/101 course equivalencies (Refer to the BMEG specific sub-menu).

Requesting a Transfer Credit Assessment (Scroll down to "General Transfer Credit Information" and open the sub-menu "Unassigned Credits and Transfer Credit Assessment Request).

A transfer credit assessment request can take between 6 – 8 weeks to complete from the time you submitted the request to when you are notified of the outcome. In the meantime, you will need to register for the courses you have requested transfer credits, in case the assessment is not successful. You will have until the course drop deadline to modify your registration.
