3.0 Registration Guide 2025W: Start Here.

Important 2025W Schedule and Registration Information

The university has transitioned to a new system, Workday Student, to replace the Student Service Centre.  Information about Workday Student is available for students here: https://workday.students.ubc.ca/

Ahead of registration, please be aware of the following changes to the 2025W schedule and to course registration processes. This page may be updated as needed.

Schedule Notes:

  • Students must register in both Term 1 and Term 2 courses. After registering, please confirm you have registered in courses in Terms 1 and 2.
  • BMEG 402 – This course will be offered in Term 1 (September 2025) and fulfills the Complementary Studies requirement for "Impact of Engineering on Society, Sustainability, and Environmental Stewardship." Starting in 2025W, BMEG students must take BMEG 402 to meet their IMPACT course requirement. If you have not completed your Impacts requirement before 2025W, you will need to take this course.

  • BMEG 250 - Only one lab section is offered, instead of four lab sections.
  • BMEG 401 - There are two sections for this course:
    • Section 201 will be Tuesdays/Thursdays 8:00-9:30 am
    • Section 202 will be Wednesdays 14:00-17:00.
  • BMEG 457 - Students on co-op are not permitted to take BMEG 457 at the same time as their co-op term. If there are any course conflicts with BMEG 457, please contact students@sbme.ubc.ca
  • CPEN 221B - For students taking CPEN 221B, BMEG students will have reserved seats in the lab sections L1A and L1C. Please only register into these sections as the times do not conflict with your other core courses.

Registration Notes:

Please be aware that due to the set-up of Workday and how it pulls course information from the Academic Calendar, some BMEG elective courses that have pilot course codes (ie. 400 + letter) will appear as lecture-only courses. It is important to plan for the other sections (Labs, Discussions) in your schedule separately, to ensure there isn't a conflict. Workday will not notify you of a conflict with your schedule.

BMEG 400 - Pilot Courses (Letter Code): Starting in the 2025 Winter session, students can take up to 12 credits from any combination of BMEG 400 pilot courses. In extenuating circumstances, students may be allowed to exceed this limit. To request an exception, email students@sbme.ubc.ca with details of your situation.

Waitlist Management

Students cannot self-register for waitlists if missing pre-requisites and/or if transfer credits are being used as pre-requisites (as the system may not catch them). If you test your registration in Workday and receive an error, please reach out to us at: students@sbme.ubc.ca

If a course is full, students are asked to register for the waitlist and the system will automatically notify you if a space becomes available. Please note that as per the Calendar, student registration in specific courses may be prioritized based on progression and graduation requirements.

Students must register by July 15th so that Student Services can review waitlists and make adjustments if necessary.

Course Registration Request

If you cannot self-register for a BMEG course and/or waitlist due to a pre-req issue, please email Student Services at students@sbme.ubc.ca for assistance. Student Services will review this and trouble-shoot the registration issue and determine the best course of action. This may include registering you in the course (space permitting), or directing you to other supports, depending on the issue.

Reviewing Program Requirements

The Academic Progress Report (APR) in Workday shows your program requirements, and whether or not you have met the requirements. If you see any possible errors in their Academic Progress Report, please notify SBME Student Services to look into the issue.

Graduation checks will start after July 31st, and will be considered informal because course plans can change ahead of the add/drop deadlines of terms 1 and 2. Please refer to the Academic Progress Reports in Workday but these will NOT be considered accurate, as both EAS and BMEG must go through each one. See the EAS webpage for some additional details.

Course Conflicts

If a core course is conflicting with another core course, please let Student Services know as it may be an issue for other students. If you have a conflict between a core course and an elective, it is important to prioritize the core course. If you have any other conflict, you can request permission to register in courses that conflict, though a reminder that this is discouraged and not guaranteed to be approved.

Registration in non-BMEG Courses

Core courses in the BMEG curriculum should allow students to register, but if not, please email SBME Student Services so we can investigate. Electives otherwise will likely have restrictions on who can register. If you do not have the pre-requisite for a non-BMEG course, you can email the instructor to request to take the course, and if approved, please ask the department administering the course for help with registration.
