About PAT Workshop Template

Peer assessment can be used in many different ways, which will have implications for the design of your training workshop. This PAT workshop module idea will work best if your peer assessment is based on an assignment with a rubric which identifies specific expectations about your assignment and a specific list of scoring criteria. Assignments can be written essays, posters, videos, webpages, presentations, etc.

For customization, faculty will need to update this template with their own assignment description, the criteria (rubric) students will use to evaluate each other’s work, and one or more sample assignments that have already been assessed by an expert (e.g., instructor) using the criteria.

PAT Workshop Activities at a Glance

The workshop has a simple three-part structure:

  1. PART 1: Assignment & Rubric where you provide students with the information about an assignment and grading rubric. Students must pass a quiz, that assess their understanding about the assignment and rubric, before they proceed to the next step. 
  2. PART 2: Mini-lesson on Writing a Critical & Constructive Comment which provides several tips for writing quality feedback with examples of some poor and better written comments. Students are then asked to rank sample comments from best to worst. 
  3. PART 3: Sample Essay(s) where students practice peer review skills. For each essay, students proceed through the sequence of steps outlined below. 
Step 1: Read Sample Essay Students read a sample essay, keeping the rubric criteria in mind.

Step 2: Rate Aspects

Students rate each criterion in the rubric (multiple-choice quiz format) and compare their rating choice with the instructor's.  
↓
Step 3: Write & Review Comments Students write and submit critical, constructive comment about the sample essay to the discussion board and then have a chance to read comments submitted by other workshop participants. Through discussion, students will co-construct feedback and learning from one another.
