Calendar
The course Calendar can be helpful in supporting the organization and logistics of the course for you and your students. When creating activities, you can check the 'Add to Student To-Do' option to have them integrated into the calendar. To-do items will also show up as a summary list on the homepage sidebar for students.
The Calendar is used for reminding students of graded Assignments with specific due dates, other non-graded activities marked as 'To-Do', and providing students with information about synchronous class times as scheduled in the course syllabus.
The calendar automatically syncs with other features in Canvas, such as Assignments. If you create, change, or delete the due date of an Assignment on the calendar, it will be reflected in the other spaces. You can change dates easily by dragging and dropping Assignments from one date to another.
You can learn more about using the calendar on this Canvas Community page: How to Use the Calendar as an Instructor

To Do
To support students in your course, you can use the 'Add to Student To-Do' check box so they know that these are tasks you want them to complete. This option is available when creating Pages or Discussions.
Assignments and Quizzes can be added to the student list of items for completion by assigning a due date.
You can also provide information so students know how to add items to their own To-Do. See the information for students found in the Calendar tab on the Getting Started with Canvas Basics page.
Course Organization
Make effective use of the Course Summary section at the end of the Syllabus page which lists important due dates. The Course Summary reflects the events and activities linked to the calendar and can be updated regularly during the semester as you add information or change tasks.
