Discussions

This showcase offers some examples of Discussions, but others can be created as needed for student engagement with content and with each other. Discussion with other course participants is a vital part of learning. Online discussion forums can be an effective way to get students to reflect on the reading, build knowledge with each other, and assist in creating a classroom community.

This Canvas Community blog explains how to view, reply to, and edit discussion posts with screenshots. UBC also offers an additional resource on managing Discussions and Communication in Canvas.

Examples of Discussions

The Peer Support discussion can be made available throughout the term for general discussions to take place. It can be a space for students to ask questions about assignments, post additional resources, or just to stay connected. A benefit of this discussion is the potential to crowd-source information among the course community and provide students with the opportunity to help each other.

Visit the Asynchronous Discussions to learn more about how these interactions can take place.

Discussion Rubric

Providing a discussion grading rubric can clarify your expectations and help students better understand how to thoughtfully engage in these important learning opportunities. Here is an example of a general discussion rubric that can be adjusted for your course: Using Discussion Rubrics Links to an external site..
