Be aware of 'Netiquette' and follow a code of behavior for communicating online. The rules for netiquette will vary, depending on the context. For this course, you will use both formal and informal communications.
Online interaction in this course is meant to encourage:
- understanding of course-related materials and topics;
- social interactions to further our shared understanding;
- relationship/community-building within the context of this course;
- trust between participants in this course;
- collaboration in groups or on assignments;
- and spaces to offer feedback, appreciation, and encouragement.
Guidelines for Online Communication
- Introduce yourself.
- Remember that culture influences communication. Stay open and ask questions — avoid assumptions.
- We all come with personalities. Remember there is a person behind the words. Ask for clarification before making judgments.
- Check your tone before publishing in a Discussion.
- Respond to people using their names and gender preferences.
- People participate in different ways — some just by reading the communication rather than jumping into it.
- Avoid jokes and sarcasm — they often don’t translate well to the online environment.
- Be judicious and cautious in your text responses to others.
- Consider your responsibility to the group and to this learning environment.
- If you are working collaboratively — agree on ground rules for text communication (formal or informal; seek clarification whenever needed).
- Accept and forgive mistakes. Seek clarification before reacting.
- Always quote if you are responding to a specific point made by someone else.
- Ask the author of an email before forwarding it.
* Sometimes, online behavior can appear so disrespectful and even hostile that it requires attention and follow-up. In this case, let your instructor know right away so that the right resources can be called upon to help.
