Your learning will be supported by additional digital tools both within and outside of the Canvas LMS. Here you will find information about some of the most commonly used tools.
Click on the tabs below to view details about using these different digital tools that may be found within your Canvas course.
This digital tool is embedded and integrated into Canvas, ready for your use. If you have not used Kaltura before, consider this UBC's version of YouTube or Vimeo. You can safely upload, store, and share your videos and media files in Kaltura. There is no limit to your file size and/or the amount you can store.
You can also access your Kaltura media on the Teaching & Learning Media website. Once logged in with your CWL, you can view, upload, and edit any media you have previously uploaded to Kaltura in Canvas. The opposite is also true: any media you upload to the Teaching & Learning Media site will be visible in your personal media repository within Canvas under My Media.
My Media
This is your private space for storing media items. The introductory videos below will describe how you can upload media/videos to this space.
Uploading video assignments in Canvas. As a student, begin watching from the :48 second mark until the end of the student section at the 1:15 min mark. Pause the video if you need to review the steps.
Recording a Kaltura Video
There are different options for recording in a Canvas Discussion. It is commonly recommended that video posts be kept to a maximum of 3 to 5 minutes.
Use the Kaltura record button in the rich text editor. This tends to be the most stable way to record and is recommended especially for lengthier videos. There is an embedded desktop recorder you can download.
Alternatively, you can upload media files from your device (click +Add New for this option) or use the built-in 'live record' button in the rich media editor to record audio (select 'Use Mic') or record video (select 'Use Webcam'). Note: For video files, this can be slow when saving and sometimes less stable than Kaltura.
Record your video on another device and upload it to Canvas. Upload your video to Kaltura (UBC-housed, secure via CWL login) and embed it into Canvas using the Kaltura button, by copying and pasting the link, or by pasting the Kaltura embed code.
If security is not a concern based on the content, you may also use YouTube. You can embed videos in Canvas with the 'Youtube' button in the rich media editor.
This is a service provided by the UBC library and resides outside of the Canvas LMS. You are able to access LOCR from within Canvas if this is enabled by your course instructor. There are two ways to access LOCR ā outside of Canvas as a Standalone LOCR site, or within your Canvas course.
When sharing media online, it is important to know that you have permission to do so. Some tools such as Kaltura will walk you through the copyright process. Use media you made yourself and/or seek Creative CommonsLinks to an external site. Media when possible. Remember to attribute/cite sources. More info on Creative Commons Search can be found in the Scarfe Digital Sandbox. Refer to the Scarfe Sandbox Resources on Copyright and or UBC's Image Citation resources.
Respect Privacy Be respectful if you will be using your own photos/videos. Make sure you have permission to include photos/video of people who are identifiable, even if the photos were taken in a public space or even if you were not planning on posting your Assignment publicly. If you don't have permission or can't obtain it, try to blur and block visible faces before sharing.
Digital Literacies
Digital literacy skills and strategies are important to student success in online environments. Refer to the Welcome to Online Learning: Digital Literacies course as a resource to build knowledge as well as a reference guide to be reviewed and revisited when you work with digital tools and technologies as part of your coursework.
