H5P

H5P is a free software application whereby "authors may create and edit interactive videos, presentations, games, advertisements and more. Content may be imported and exported. All that is needed to view or edit H5P content is a web browser." ( H5P website ). At UBC, these interactive items are created on a dedicated Wordpress site which any faculty member can sign up to use. Once the interactive element has been created, the HTML code is copied, then pasted into the rich text editor in Canvas (Pages, Assignments, Quizzes or Discussions). There are several options available using H5P to create interactive content within courses. Below is a list of some of the most commonly used formats.

H5P can be used to:

  • Present text-heavy content in various interactive formats
  • Embed formative tools directly into course content for immediate student feedback
  • Reuse content across sections and courses
  • Add interactive questions and comments to YouTube videos

Our instance of H5P is FIPPA compliant (it follows provincial privacy policy) and all content is stored in Canada. No student data is collected.

 

Image Slider 

Image sliders can be great to use within your online course. They can support learners by:

  • Giving students both images and text and a specific sequence for viewing.
  • Making visual information more engaging without needing to scroll down a long page of images.

Interactive Video  

Select a video that has challenging content or has an extended viewing time. Create interactive elements at time-markers during the video that will keep students engaged and attentive. The H5P interactive item can be set as a required response before the video continues playing.

Slideshow Presentation

H5P can be used to present information while engaging students in interactive elements where responses are required.

Here is one example looking at digital literacies. 

 

 

Accordion

Using an accordion in your course is helpful when you want to share text heavy information. It is possible to share topic headings, questions, keywords, or phrases.  Those students wishing to further explore the topic are able to expand the information by clicking on the title. 

This example was used in the Digital Literacies modules covering digital literacy basics. 

 

 

Dialogue Cards

Dialogue cards are helpful for learners learning words, expressions, or sentences. Dialogue cards are often used in language acquisition, learning formulas, historic events, or key characters from an event.  

This example is from a digital literacies module that focused on web structure and algorithms. 

 

Drag and Drop

Drag and drop elements are used when asking students to make connections with course content in a more visual way. This kind of H5P element is useful when testing student knowledge on a topic area.  

This is a sample from the Digital Literacies modules.  Students are asked to drag and drop the terms that are attributed to new learners.
