Infographic Assignment

  • Due No Due Date
  • Points 100
  • Submitting a website url, a media recording, or a file upload

Overview

This two-part assignment requires you to produce an infographic as a way to demonstrate your learning.  Infographics are visual representations that provide information in an easy to understand and  'digest' format. An infographic might be made to communicate a collection of data, provide an overview of a topic or theme, or share an abstract or synthesis of a reading or resource. Typically, infographics include:

  • Data visualizations such as pie charts & graphs
  • Carefully selected images that help inform the reader
  • Brief pieces of text and the use of text features to support ease of reading including bullet points, bolding, headers & sub-headers

Why do Infographics Work?*

VISUALS + TEXT + DATA

  • Visuals allow for faster information processing
  • Information presented with visuals (images or video) is more likely to be remembered
  • Our brains are hardwired to engage with stories and storytelling
  • Well designed infographics grab our attention, much faster than text alone
  • Infographics help to make large sets of data understandable
  • No special skills to create infographics, and tools readily available
  • Easy to share online

PART 1: Select and Research your Topic

Select one of the readings from the course. Create a visual representation of the key ideas in the reading. Your infographic might be seen as a visual abstract that helps to summarize the reading for an audience and connect it to the guiding questions, other readings and themes in this course. Your infographic should include:

  • A descriptive title and your name
  • Appropriate graphics and/or data visualization
  • Use of text features that help to clearly communicate your message
  • Reference(s)

Any desktop publishing tool might be used to create an infographic or you might even create an 'analogue' version by drawing freehand or making a collage (just take a good quality photo and upload to share). You might also try one of the online tools linked below as they provide templates and graphics you can use and adapt. They will allow you to share as a PNG, PDF or other format file.
