Full-course Canvas examples (templates)

Pieces to import from Canvas Commons

In the courses where you are an instructor, you will see an "Import from Commons" button on your home page (buttons appearing on the right side of the home page under the Unpublish/Publish widget). That leads to a search page, where you can search for "ubc" or "ctlt" to find sample pages, modules, and courses from UBC that you can fill out with your own course content. To see some examples deployed in courses, here are the self-enroll links for 3 templates used in Biology courses:

(Note: the banner image and "Welcome to BIOL XXX" you see in those can be removed if desired.)

Instructions for importing these templates:

Open your Canvas site, and in the right menu, find "Import from Commons." In the search bar, search for UBC Biol template, and click on the desired template type. There will be a blue button to "Import/Download" to select your target course and import. For assistance, please contact LT.support@science.ubc.ca.

(Thank you to Maki Sumitani from the Biology Program for the above.)

Full Canvas course Templates

The following templates can be downloaded and imported to your course to provide an initial structure - if you want to import one of these full-course templates, please contact LT.support@science.ubc.ca for assistance.

Other faculties have developed their own Canvas course templates to help bring consistency between online courses and facilitate the adoption of Canvas as learning management system for their courses.

  • CTLT LD Canvas Course Template: this generic course template includes sample announcements, syllabus via an embedded PDF viewer, and overall a structure that you can fill in and modify. Self-enroll here: https://canvas.ubc.ca/enroll/R4PTHT
  • Arts Remote Teaching Template: Arts-branded template with similar features to the above but a more compact home page and overall different look (can adjust colours if you like). https://canvas.ubc.ca/enroll/GJX7KJ

See "How do I copy content from another Canvas course using the Course Import tool? Links to an external site." for specific instructions.
