Using this tool, start mapping out your course learning outcomes Links to an external site. or topics, assessments and learning activities/resources. This process may take some time, but will help you ensure your online course is designed to support student learning.

As you move through this activity, please reflect on the following questions:

  1. What do you want to achieve in your online course? Will you use synchronous or asynchronous activities – or both? Might a flipped classroom approach be appropriate?
  2. Who are your students? What level of experience with online learning is likely amongst your intended learners? What support might your students need to make a successful transition to online learning?
  3. What resources do you already have that you might be able to repurpose for online learning? How do these resources attend to aspects of classroom climate such as geographical location, positionality of yourself and your students and acknowledgement of Indigenous territories?

Once you fill in this Course Planning Tool, you may find that there are some components (e.g., assessments, lesson pages, videos, and modules) that require development, flag these items for review as many of these components.  Highlight those items as they will be addressed in future Online Teaching Program modules.

As part of the Online Teaching Program, the CTLT in Vancouver and CTL in the Okanagan are offering one-on-one consultations to instructors who are interested in a meeting with an Educational Consultant.  These sessions allow you to sound out ideas about transitioning your course to the online environment, explore strategies to support active learning online, and seek additional information regarding technologies to support student engagement, interaction and assessment.
