3.0 Introduction
Assessment, measuring or evaluating student learning, is an essential component of a course. Assessment allows instructors to determine whether students are achieving learning goals and whether instructional methods are effective. Students can learn their strengths and weaknesses from the assessment results, play an active role in their own growth and development, and adjust their learning strategies as necessary (Maki, 2002). This module is about how to plan, design and develop assessments in online courses by modifying or recreating the assessments in the course last time you taught. The module will also address providing feedback online, involving students in the assessment process, rubrics, and encouraging academic integrity in online assessments.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, you should be able to:
- Adapt your course assessments for your online course.
- Determine a set of feedback strategies to nurture students’ learning.
- Create rubrics to communicate expectations and reduce marking burden for your course.
- Explain the importance of academic integrity to students.
- Design assessments to encourage academic integrity.
