Welcome Message

[Welcome your students. Provide a brief overview of the course.]

[Provide biographical information about yourself.  You may post your photo.]

[Explain how students can be successful in the course and how you are going to help students succeed in the course. Since it is easier for students to feel disengaged and procrastinate in an online course, it is helpful to provide some reminders about good study habits and personal time management. The Online Learners section from the UBC Learning Commons provides more comprehensive resources for online learners.]

[Provide an overview of the course structure, major components of the course, and the typical learning sequence/rhythm of the course.]

[Tell students how to get started]

This week I suggest you:

  1. Access Announcements from the course navigation on the left and read my first announcement.
  2. Read the Course Syllabus and post questions to the Course Q & A Forum if you have any questions about the syllabus.
  3. Read all the materials in this Course Introduction module.
  4. Look through the course to familiarize yourself with the course website.
  5. Read this: Communicating Online: Netiquette
  6. Start the first week.

[Inform students how they can contact you and TA to get some help. Help them feel that you are accessible and approachable. Encourage students to interact, help and support each other.]
