Communication Protocols

The following outlines communication protocols for this course.

How I want you to use it.

Announcement

Important announcements will be made by me using the announcement tool. Please check back frequently on weekly basis.

Email

Every enrolled student in this class has access to Canvas course email. Canvas email is the preferred mode of communication in this class. These mails do get forwarded to the instructors’ e-mail addresses.

Important! Do not contact me using my university email for the duration of this course unless you have an emergency. If you have to contact us because of an emergency, you may use our email firstname.lastname@ubc.ca as listed in the syllabus. In case you need to contact me using my UBC email, to avoid having your message mistakenly identified as SPAM, please identify the course in the subject line (ABCD XXX) when you email me at my university email.

Our Response Time to You. We will respond to all inquiries, questions, and other electronic correspondence in a timely, but not necessarily an immediate manner. Most electronic communications will be answered within 48 hours. Weekends may take longer.

Discussion Forums

The discussion board in Canvas is a public forum. It looks and functions just like email but it goes to the entire class. We will use the discussion board a lot to have class discussions throughout the course. Be careful what you say to someone in the discussion too because everyone in the class will see it, and it cannot be retracted! Please abide by Netiquette Expectations when talking to your classmates.

Grades

Grades in Canvas is the place you go to check your grades and my feedback to your participation, assignments, and exams. Participation grade will be updated on a weekly basis. Grades on assignments will be posted in Grades within 72 hours of the due date of the assignment. Grades on exams can be seen immediately upon submission. You must refer to Grades in the course site to determine your grade.

Surveys

I will set-up surveys  to ask for your opinion or concerns for issues that relate to the topics we learned in the course. Your participation will count partially for the overall participation score as described in the grading policies in the syllabus.

Zoom

I will host a live classroom session using Zoom during our scheduled class times. The link for the Zoom classroom session will be available from the Zoom link in the course menu. You can download the Zoom application to prepare for these sessions, you do not have to make an account.

Office Hours

Office hours will be offered virtually through Zoom.  Please join the Zoom session during my regular office hours. If my scheduled office hours do not work, please email me and we can set up an alternate time to connect.
