The communication tools built into Canvas are not monitored by the program so if you need to get in touch with us, email languages.exl@ubc.ca and we will respond within one business day. If you have questions about the material or for the instructor, you'll find their email above.

Missing a class

If you won't be able to make a class, contact your instructor directly and they can provide you with any missed materials. If your same class is offered at a different time, you may be able to attend that class in its place. Email languages.exl@ubc.ca to find out if you can make up a class.

Letter of completion

If you would like a letter of completion, email languages.exl@ubc.ca once the course has ended. Letters will be emailed and may take a week to arrive.

What is Canvas?

Canvas is a learning management system that UBC uses to deliver courses. The system provides information on orientation, schedules, grades and instructor contact details, as well as learning resources and overviews of course curriculum.

You can find information for how to use Canvas published by UBC's IT department here. Also found at that link are resources for troubleshooting any Canvas related problems you may encounter.

You can find the material you will use in your classes under the tab above titled Class Material.

Ways to access Canvas

Canvas is available through any web browser available on your computer, phone, or tablet. If you run into any problems, we recommend trying to a different browser - so try Google Chrome if you typically use Safari, or Firefox if you typically use Google Chrome.

You can also access Canvas through a mobile app on your phone or tablet. Simply search for Canvas on the app store of your device and download the version titled Canvas for Students by Instructure. Having Canvas on a second device can be useful during class as the instructor may reference some material they posted online during an activity.

How long will we have access to Canvas?

You will have access to Canvas until one week after the date of your last class. If there's anything you'd like to download, link, or otherwise save, remember to do so before that date.

Zoom is a video/audio web-conferencing and collaboration tool that lets you participate online in real-time lectures or other classroom interactions in your course. Your instructor will present material and lead activities, and you will be able to engage similar to how you would for an in-person class. For language learners, Zoom allows for a class to be broken into smaller groups, each placed in their own breakout room, which enables more practice.

Zoom is easy to use, and you don’t need an account to participate in lectures and courses; however, you will need to download and install the Zoom application. Read the Student Guide to Zoom at UBC for detailed instructions and tips.

UBC holds an enterprise licence to host Zoom meetings and has measures in place to ensure lectures and public sessions are secure. Faculty and staff also follow best practices to prevent security concerns such as "Zoom bombing."

Some tips and etiquette around using Zoom

• Remember to mute yourself when you are not speaking.
• Avoid using the speakers built into your device wherever possible and use a pair of headphones.
• For the best experience, use headphones with a built-in microphone.

What to do if you encounter technical problems?

Most issues can be solved by doing one of two things. If you're not able to connect to the class, or if either the video or audio stops working during the class, first close Zoom entirely and rejoin the class. If you're still having problems, the next step is to restart your computer. It's a good habit to be a bit early for your class to make sure you have time to do either of the above steps so you don't miss out on any material.
