Kaltura: Video Quizzes
Kaltura Video Quizzes
Create a Video Quiz
- From My Media, launch the Video Editor for the video you would like to add a quiz to (see Kaltura: Edit Recordings in My Media)
- In the left bar of the Video Editor page, click the Quiz icon [1], the click Start [2] to create a new quiz.
- The Quiz creation page will display. Before you begin to create questions, define your quiz settings through the three expandable options: Details, Scores and Experience.
- In the Details section, you can set the following:
- The name of the quiz.
- If you would like to display a Welcome Message at the beginning of the quiz, and the content of the message. If you select to display a Welcome Page, then you will have the remaining options, as well:
- Allow Download of Questions List - if this is selected, students can download a PDF of all questions and possible answers prior to viewing the video.
- Instructions - if this is selected, students will see the instructions listed.
- In the Scores section, you can set the following:
- If you would like to allow the students to have multiple attempts to answer the quiz questions.
- Whether to show scores.
- If you select to show scores, you can also select if you would like to show students their correct/incorrect answers.
- In the Experience section, you can set the following:
- Whether to allow students to change their answers before submitting.
- Whether to allow students to skip questions and come back to them.
- If you do not allow students to skip a question, then you can also enable the option to also not allow students to navigate to a position in the video past the location of the question.
- Click the collapse/expand icon [1] to hide the quiz settings, and focus on the video. Navigate to the position in the video where you would like to add a quiz question. You can do this with the play/pause video controls [2] or by dragging the timeline marker [3] to a precise position in your video. Click on the Question Type icon [4] on the video when you have set the time position for the question to appear in your video.
Although Multiple Choice is selected by default, you can click on the greyed out hexagons to select a different question type. Question type options include:- Multiple Choice: Question with one correct answer (maximum four possible answers)
- True/False: Question with an answer of true or false.
- Open Question: Answer is free text.
- Reflection Point: This type of question pauses the video and displays text, but does not provide anywhere to submit an answer. The student must click continue to proceed with watching the video.
- Enter the question and answer information for the type of question you selected.
- You will see block icons on the video timeline indicating where questions will appear in the video. You can adjust the location of each question by clicking on a blue block icon and dragging it to a new location. When all questions have been added, click the Done button at the top.
- You will be returned to the Video Editor window. The question block icons are greyed out, indicating their locations, but that they can not be edited. Click on the Edit Quiz button at the top to return to the previous screen and to continue editing the quiz questions, or click on the Go To Media Page button to publish the quiz.
- The video quiz needs to be published for students to view and take the quiz. On the media page, below the video, select +Publish from the Actions drop-down menu.
- A message will pop up indicating that all required fields have not been completed. Click the Edit link.
-
Scroll down to Copyright Permissions and click Select a value. If the video is your own creation, select With the Permission of the Copyright Holder(s). You will not be able to share your video until you have set the Copyright Permissions.
- Scroll down and Save. You will not be able to publish until after you have saved the Copyright selection.
- The page will reload with a notice that your changes have been saved. Scroll to the Publishing Schedule (under the Copyright Permissions section).
- Select your publishing schedule - once published, it can be always visible, or only visible for a specific time frame.
- To share the video with your students, you need to change the selection from Private to Published.
- Select the course to publish the video to. You can publish to one or more courses.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and Save.
Take a Video Quiz
Share your video quiz with students in the same way that you would share a video - we recommend that you embed the video on a page.- When a student views the video quiz, if you have selected to include a Welcome Message [1], it will be displayed as soon as the student selects to play the video. If you have allowed a download of questions, a Pre-test Available icon [2] will display - when students click on this icon they will download a pdf copy of the quiz questions and possible answers. If you selected to display instructions, the instruction text [3] will be included. If you have allowed multiple attempts and the student has already taken the quiz, they will be presented with an additional "Take the Quiz Again" button. When students are ready to begin the video quiz, they click on the Continue button.
- If you have selected "Do not allow Skip" and "No Seeking Forward", students will see your custom message when they start to view the video, indicating that they may not seek ahead in the video. They are unable to move the video playback timeline forward (they can't skip portions of the video), but they can drag the timeline backwards to re-watch portions of the video.
- As the student views the video, they can see icons indicating where questions will appear in the video.
- When the video reaches the location of a question, the video will pause playback and present the question. If you selected to allow skip, students have an option to Skip for Now. If you have not allowed them to skip a question, then they must provide an answer before being allowed to continue.
- Students select or enter their answer to continue the video. When they get to the end of the video, if they have opted to skip any questions, they will receive a notice indicating that they have unanswered questions.
- When all questions have been answered, if you have allowed answers to be changed, students will have the option to Review their answers. Otherwise, they can Submit the quiz.
- If you have selected the option to show scores, then the student will be presented with their score. (Open question type questions are not automatically scored.)
