Screencast with Kaltura Capture
Kaltura is a videostreaming tool integrated with Canvas, and among its features are My Media, Media Gallery and Kaltura Capture.
Install Kaltura Capture
- In your Canvas course, click My Media.
- At the top right of the My Media page that appears, click Add New.
- In the drop-down list that appears, click Kaltura Capture.
- The download page will appear. Click the download link for the computer you have – either Windows or Mac. You can also click on the User Manual at bottom to download the manual.
- When the application has downloaded, you can double click it at the bottom of your web browser or in your downloads folder.
- A popup window will ask you for permission to install the application. Click Open.
- Complete the installation following the online prompts.
Record screen and webcam with Kaltura Capture
- In your Canvas course, click My Media.
- At the top right of the My Media page that appears, click Add New.
- In the drop-down list that appears, click Kaltura Capture.
- This time the download page will open with a popup that asks to open the application on your desktop, click the Open Kaltura Capture button.
- The Kaltura Capture program will start on your computer and the menu toolbar will appear.
Tool options include:- Start recording.
- Webcam settings.
- Screen capture settings.
- Microphone settings.
- Manage software settings.
- Click the arrow below the camera icon to set webcam options. You can select your webcam or any other camera or monitor on your system. You can also disable your webcam by clicking on the camera icon.
- Click the arrow below the screen icon to choose the display to record and whether you will record your Full Screen or just a Select Area of the screen.
- Full Screen records everything you see on your selected monitor.

Select Area can be used to record just a portion of your screen, such as the just the slides in a PowerPoint presentation. Drag the corners of the dashed selector such that the box surrounds the area to record. Click Confirm when satisfied. A red box will surround the area which will be recorded.
- Click the arrow below the microphone icon to set microphone options such as choosing whether to use the internal microphone or a headset microphone as the input. Note: you will have better audio quality of you use an external microphone.
- Click the Manage link on the far right of the toolbar to access the software settings.
- In the pop-up window that appears, click the gear icon on the left side of the screen.
- If you will be recording audio other than your voice (i.e. audio within a video presentation), select "Yes" next to Record System Audio. Otherwise, the recording will not pick up the audio.
- If you are recording your full screen, select "Yes" next to Auto minimize. This will minimize the toolbar while recording. If you have the toolbar positioned over your recorded area, it will show in your recording.
- Save your settings.
- Click New Recording to close the settings window and return to the toolbar.
- When you are satisfied with the settings, click the red record button. The countdown will display and the controls to stop recording will display at bottom right.
- When finished recording, click the square stop button and confirm that you want to stop the recording.
- In the window that appears, enter a title, description and tags, then click Save & Upload. The recording will begin to upload to My Media and may take a while to complete depending on the length of the video.
- On a Mac, at top left of the desktop, click Kaltura Capture, and in the drop-down menu, click exit. In Windows, click the X at top right to exit.
