Kaltura: Audio & Video Captioning
Audio & Video Captioning with Kaltura in Canvas
Captions can be generated for recorded sessions using Collaborate Ultra or Zoom and watched there. To be edited and shared elsewhere they need to be downloaded and then uploaded through Kaltura My Media. Captions from Collaborate need to be converted from VTT to SRT, and do not always play back smoothly.
Instead, any audio or video uploaded to Kaltura My Media can (1) get captions generated by Kaltura software with over 90% accuracy and (2) you can edit captions manually if needed as follows:
Get Captions in Kaltura
- In your course menu, click My Media, or in a rich content menu, click the Kaltura icon
- Add New.
- In the drop-down menu, click Media Upload.
- In the upload Media page that displays, click Choose a File to Upload.
- In the popup file listings window, select your file and click Open.
- A green bar will show the progress of upload and a copyright form will open. Under Please fill out these details, enter a name for the video, or media file.
- Scroll down and beside Copyright Permission click Select a value.
- In the drop-down list, click the permission suitable. For example, if you created the file, click With the Permission of the Copyright Holder(s).
- When finished, click Go to My Media. The new file will list there.
- When the file has finished processing, click one the name if the file(now appearing as a link).
- In the menu that appears below the audio/video, at right click ACTIONS
- In the drop-down menu that appears click +Caption & Enrich.

- Scroll down through the request form that appears and click Submit. The captioning request should take less time than the length of the recording. The software actually runs on a US server but no human eyes access it, and when it finishes the caption file is added to your My Media and erased from the US server. Once this request is processed, captions will automatically be posted back to the media file. The option to turn the captions off will also be available.
Edit Captions Manually
Edit captions as follows:
- In your computer open your text editor and create a .SRT file.
Note: It is easier to edit an .SRT file created by an auto captioner. An example of the .SRT format is here below.
- Open a browser window and play the media file (video or audio) while editing in the text file.
- When finished, save your text file. You can save it with a different name, but do NOT change the .SRT extension to .TXT.
- Go to My Media in your course menu.
- In the list of media files, click on the name the file that you would like to edit.
- Under the audio/video, at right click ACTIONS.
- In the drop-down menu, click Edit.
- In the list of tabs that appear, click Captions and then Upload captions file.
- Choose the .SRT file you created
- As the file is uploaded, you may see a popup,
a. If you didn’t change the name of your edited caption file, click to accept replacing the existing caption file of the same name or label.
b. If your new caption file has a different label, it will list separately. Click the checkmark ✔at the right of the caption file you want to set as Default for the audio/ video.

The new captions are added and you can exit
- To the right of the listed caption file (usually just one caption file), click the pencil to edit the captions.
