Respondus Lockdown Browser: Using RLDB Browser for an Online Exam (for instructors)
Using RLDB Browser for an Online Exam (for instructors)
Students may be required to use Respondus Lockdown Browser (RLDB) for an online Exam. Instructors need to enable RLDB in their course menu, and then set the exam to require it, and then students need to download and install RLDB and run it to take the online exam while invigilated. Note: RLDB does not invigilate students, it just prevents them from accessing the rest of their computer while doing the quiz.
Enable Respondus Lockdown Browser
- In your Canvas course menu, click Settings.
- At the top of the Settings page, click the Navigation tab.
- On the Navigation page, scroll down to Lockdown Browser, and then drag it up to the top list.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.

Require students use RLDB for a quiz as follows:
- In your Canvas course menu, click LockDown Browser. (This link is hidden from students).
- You will see an About LockDown Browser page. At bottom right click Continue to LockDown Browser >
- A list of all your online quizzes appears. Click the down arrow next to the quiz’s name you want to set RLDB for, then click Settings.

- In Settings, click Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. (Consult with CTL if you want to use the access password here or Advanced Settings.) Note: if you have students accessing the Canvas quiz using an iPad, you will need to enable an iPad option in the Advanced Settings.
- When finished, click Save + Close. If you have published the quiz, it is ready for the students.
