Respondus Quiz: Publish to Canvas
Publish to Canvas
Important: Respondus Quiz only works on Windows machines - it does not work with Apple devices.
Respondus allows you to compose question lists in Microsoft Word and process them for Canvas. Follow the steps in the tabs below to publish the quiz to Canvas.
- Process the Question .docx File
- Connect to Canvas through Respondus
- Upload the Respondus File to Canvas
Process the Question .docx File
- In Respondus, click on the Start tab.
- Select Canvas from the Current Personality drop-down menu.
- Click Import Questions.
- In the Import Questions window that appears, in the drop-down menu beside Type of file, select Microsoft Word 2007 (DOCX).
- Beside File name, click Browse and select your question file with the .docx extension.
- Beside Create a new document, named, enter a name for your export file.
- Optionally, check the checkbox beside Stem, and enter a letter to prefix the question IDs.
- Click the Preview button.
- If no errors appear, click Finish. If you have errors, cancel and edit your Word file then start again.
- Select the Preview + Publish tab.
- Select Preview on the left side.
- Click on Preview the File.
- The Preview window will appear.
- Click Next to step through the questions.
- If a question does not display properly or has a wrong correct answer, click Modify Item.
- In the Modify Item view, make changes to the question and click Save. If the question edits are too many or too difficult, you can quit Respondus, edit your Word file and start over.
- Once you have previewed and fixed all questions, close the Preview window.
Connect to Canvas through Respondus
On your first time connecting Respondus to Canvas, perform the following steps.
- Select the Preview + Publish tab.
- Select Publish on the left side.
- Click Publish Wizard.
- A Publish Wizard window will pop up. In the Type of Publish, select Publish to single course.
- In the Canvas Server drop-down menu, select - add new server -.
- An Add New Server Settings window will pop up. Select No, I want to enter the server settings manually, and click Next.
- The Canvas Server Settings window will pop up.
- Type https://canvas.ubc.ca/ into the address box at 2. (Note: don't forget the final slash "/" )
- Click Extract>>. (Note: If you receive an error here, you can switch over to your browser, log into Canvas, copy the address from the address bar, and paste it into 2, then repeat this step.)
- Enter a descriptive name for UBC Canvas.
- Enter your CWL username and password.
- If you are using a personal computer, check the box next to Remember my User Name and Password.
- When finished, click OK at the top right corner.
- Your web browser will open and prompt you to log in to Canvas using your CWL.
- After you have logged in, a Respondus window will pop up. Click Authorize.
- Return to the Respondus window. You should now see the Canvas server listed in the Publish Wizard window.
Upload the Respondus File to Canvas
- Select the Preview + Publish tab.
- Select Publish on the left side.
- Click Publish Wizard.
- A Publish Wizard window will pop up. In the Type of Publish, select Publish to single course.
- In the Canvas Server drop-down menu, select the UBC Canvas server that you set up.
- Click Next.
- A pop up window will tell you to log in to Canvas. Switch over to your browser window (i.e. Chrome or Firefox), and log in to Canvas with your CWL credentials.
- After you have logged in, a Respondus window will pop up. Click Authorize.
- Return to the Respondus window.
- You will be on the Publish Wizard window.
- Select either Graded Quiz or Question Bank (depending on how you want the questions loaded into Canvas).
- If this is the first time uploading these questions to Canvas, select Create and enter a name for the quiz, as it will appear in Canvas. If you are replacing an existing quiz, select Replace.
- Most Canvas users skip section 3. Click Next to continue.
- The Publish Wizard now shows a list of your Canvas courses. Select the course you want to upload to, then click Next.
- The Publish Wizard will display a status window. It may flash a message saying "Not Responding". Be patient, eventually the message - Publish Completed Successfully - will display at the bottom of the window. Click Finish when Respondus has completed publishing.
- Switch to your browser and go to your Canvas course. Click Quizzes in the course menu. The quiz you have sent from Respondus will be in the list, unpublished. Edit your quiz settings as desired.
