Zero points assignment
Create a new assignment with zero points possible. This only works properly in weighted assignment groups if the zero points assignment is in an assignment group that has another assignment worth more than zero points
- In your course menu, click Assignments.
- In the upper right hand corner of the Assignments page, click +Assignment.
- Provide a title for the assignment
- Provide an optional description of the assignment.
- Next to Points, enter 0.
- If you have created assignment groups, beside Assignment Group click the down arrow to list the available assignment groups, can click the group in which you want to place the assignment. Note: the assignment group should also contain an assignment worth at least 1 point.
- Scroll down to beside Submission Type, and from the drop-down list, click No Submission. Note: this will allow you to enter points, but students will not be able to submit a file.
- When finished scroll to the bottom and click Save or Save & Publish.
- Once students have completed or submitted for another assignment, score that assignment in Grades or Speedgrader.
- When in Grades, in the zero point assignment column, enter the bonus points you choose to give each student.
Add more points than "out of"
In an existing assignment, enter more points in Grades than the points it is out of.
- In the course menu, click Grades.
- In the column of the assignment, enter more points than the column label says it is "out of". For example, if the assignment is out of 30 points, you can give 5 extra points by entering 35.
Quiz fudge points
Canvas quizzes has a fudge point feature to allow you to add positive or negative points to a quiz to individual students in Speedgrader.
- In your course menu, click Quizzes.
- In the list of quizzes that appears, click the name of the quiz you want to score.
- At top right of the quiz summary page that appears, click SpeedGrader.
- In the student drop-down menu in the upper right corner of your screen, click the name of the student whose quiz you want to view.
- Where the quiz questions list, scroll to the bottom of the quiz where the fudge point field appears. (You can also search the web page for Fudge). In the Fudge points field enter the number of points you want to add to the overall quiz score. Note: the Final Score at the bottom of the quiz will show the final score adjusted with the addition of the fudge points.
- To save the new quiz score, click the Update Scores button.
Add extra points to a rubric
Add a criterion to a rubric for the extra points. Ensure that the total points for the rubric is greater than that of the assignment. Create the rubric, add it to the assignment and score the assignment as follows:Creating the rubric
- Select Rubrics in the course menu on the left.
- Select + Add Rubric in the upper right corner of the page.
- Enter a name for the rubric, and fill in the rubric criteria. Assign one of the criteria for extra credit/points as shown in the red box below. For example, if the assignment is out of 20 points, the points in extra credit criterion should push the total past 20 points.
Adding the rubric to the assignment
- Once you have created the rubric, in the course menu, click Assignments.
- In the list of assignments click the name of the assignment to which you will add the rubric.
- At the bottom of the Assignment summary page that opens, click +Rubric.
- In the rubric page that opens, at top right, click Find a Rubric.
- Click the name of the rubric you would like to assign to the assignment.
- Below the rubric, click Use this Rubric.
- The rubric is now assigned to the assignment.
- To the right of the rubric name, select the pencil icon.
- Scroll down and click the checkbox next to Use this rubric for assignment grading.
- Click Update Rubric.br />
Adding Extra Credit Points using a Rubric in SpeedGrader
- In your course menu click Assignments.
- Click the name of the assignment that you would like to grade.
- In the Assignment summary page that opens, at far right, click SpeedGrader.
- The SpeedGrader page opens. At top right of SpeedGrader, in the student drop-down menu, click the name of the student whose assignment you want to view.
- In the right window, click View Rubric. The rubric opens in which you can enter points for that student.
- When finished for that student, scroll down and click Save. The points in the rubric will be saved.
Extra Credit Assignment Group
You can make extra credit to be a percentage of the final grade by organizing your assignments into weighted assignment groups that equal 100%, and the extra credit assignment group pushes the total percentage possible above 100%. In the example below, the extra credit assignment group results in a possible score of 110%. The assignments in the extra credit assignment group must be out of at least 1 point. Since Canvas calculates a running total that only includes assignments with a score, the final total of the course will not be accurate until a score is entered for all assignments.
Add a Bonus Point with Excel
You can export the gradebook as a CSV file and manually change students' scores in the downloaded CSV file. Once the CSV file has been modified, you can import the file back into the gradebook and the gradebook will be updated to the changes made in the CSV file.
- In your course menu, click Grades.
- Next to Actions, click the down arrow.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, click Export. A CSV file of the course gradebook will begin to download.
- Once the CSV file has downloaded, open the file in Excel and manually change students' scores for the specific assignment to which want to add extra points.
- Delete all assignment columns that you have not edited, and all rows of students whose scores you have not edited. The file should only include the title rows in addition to the assignment(s) and student(s) which will have updated grades.
- Save the CSV file, and return to Grades in your Canvas course.
- At the top of the Grades table, click Actions.
- In the drop-down menu that opens, click Import.
- Click Choose File to browse for and select the CSV file with the modified gradebook.
- Click Upload Data.
- You will now see the grade changes you made in the CSV file compared to the current grades in the Canvas gradebook. If the changes are correct, click Save Changes.
Now when you navigate back to the gradebook, the grades will display the changes you made in the gradebook CSV file.
