Canvas quizzes generate statistics based on student performance on the quiz. Quiz statistics can be viewed directly in Canvas with graphic charts if the quiz has 100 or fewer questions and 1000 or fewer student attempts. Otherwise, quiz statistics can be downloaded as a CSV file and viewed in Microsoft Excel where additional statistics are shown but without graphics.
To view statistics for a quiz:
In your Canvas course, click on Quizzes in the course navigation bar on the left.
Find the quiz whose statistics you want to view and click on its name.
In the quiz summary page, either at far right or at far bottom, click on Quiz Statistics. Note: this option is only visible if the quiz has at least one student submission.
The top of the quiz statistics page that opens shows the quiz's Average, High, and Low Scores, its Standard Deviation, and the Average Time to complete the quiz, as well as a graphical distribution of scores.
Scroll down the page to view statistics for each individual question. The statistics include how many students responded to the question, and the distribution of student responses. For multiple choice and true/false questions there is a discrimination index that measures how much that specific question is able to discriminate between students who did well and students who did not do well on the quiz.
Quiz Statistics as a CSV File
For quizzes larger than 100 questions and for more detailed statistics, you can download a CSV file by clicking on Student Analysis or Item Analysis in the top right corner of the quiz statistics page. This file can be opened in Microsoft Excel for viewing.
The Student Analysis Report details the performance of each student, organizing each attempt made by each student into a row.
The left-most columns provide the following details:
Student name.
Student ID.
The section of each student.
The date and time each student submitted the quiz.
The student's attempt number that the row corresponds to.
The columns to the right of the attempt column list the questions in order. For each question, they show:
An ID number associated with the question followed by the question text.
The total number of points the question is worth.
The responses of each student to the question.
The number of points each student earned in that question.
Finally, the right-most columns show:
The total number of questions answered correctly or partially correct by each student.
The total number of questions answered incorrectly by each student.
The final score of each student.
Item Analysis Report
The Item Analysis Report shows advanced statistics for each individual question, but only for the multiple choice and true/false question types. It can be interpreted as the difficulty or fairness of a question. This report organizes each question into a row, with various statistic columns to the right of the question text. These statistics include:
Answered Student Count: the number of students who answered this question.
Top, Middle, and Bottom Student Count: the number of students scoring in the top 27%, middle 46%, and bottom 27% of the class, respectively.
Quiz Question Count: total number of quiz questions.
Correct and Wrong Student Count: the number of students who answered the question correctly and incorrectly, respectively.
Correct and Wrong Student Ratio: the ratio of students who answered the question correctly and incorrectly, respectively.
Correct Top, Middle, and Bottom Student Count: the number of students in the top 27%, middle 46%, and bottom 27% respectively who answered this question correctly.
The Variance of scores for this question.
The Standard Deviation of scores for this question.
The Difficulty Index of this question.
The Alpha score for the whole quiz.
The Point Biserial of the correct answer, followed by the point biserial of each incorrect answer.
