Canvas: Create a Peer Review Assignment

Create a Peer Review Assignment in Canvas

When creating an assignment, you can require students to complete a peer review of another student's work. Canvas Peer Review allows students to award points and comment on a peer's assignment submission, but not grade the assignment. Grading the assignment is the task of the instructor or TA. If you want students to review a group member's general contribution to their group, then consider the external tool, iPeer.

Creating a Peer Review Assignment

Follow these steps in order to create and assign a peer review assignment:

  1. In your course menu, select the Assignments link.
    Assignments

  2. Navigate to the top right corner and select "+ Assignment" to create a new assignment.
    Add assignment

  3. Fill in the assignment details according to the type of submission required until you get to a section titled Peer Reviews. Select the check box next to Require Peer Reviews.
    Require peer reviews

  4. Once you have selected Require Peer Reviews, a menu will appear with 3 options to select, as shown below:
    Manually Assign

    1. Manually Assign Peer Reviews- This indicates that the instructor can create the student pairings after the assignment is made.
    2. Automatically Assign Peer Reviews- This indicates that Canvas will assign students together to peer review.
    3. Peer Reviews Appear Anonymously- You can select this option at any time. This will allow students names, whether they are manually or automatically assigned, to remain anonymous.

  5. Once you have selected your peer review option and a due date for the assignment, scroll down and select Save or Save & Publish to post the assignment for students to view.
    Save
