Canvas: Regrading a Classic Quiz
Regrading a Classic Quiz in Canvas
When to Regrade
Do not regrade a quiz until all students have completed and submitted the quiz. Please consult with the Centre for Teaching and Learning before regrading.
- If you accidentally published a quiz that needs to be corrected, and students have already attempted it, you can use quiz regrade to edit existing quiz questions and tell Canvas to recalculate student grades.
- Quiz regrade only applies to specific question types (Multiple choice, True/False, and Multiple Answers).
- Adding, removing, or changing point values for a quiz question does not initiate a Canvas regrade for past quiz attempts. If you have edited your quiz in one of these three ways, you should moderate the quiz and let students retake it. This only applies if students have taken the quiz and existing questions have been altered.
Restrictions:
- The quiz regrade option does not work for questions that are linked to a question bank, as these questions could be used in multiple quizzes. We recommend creating question groups such that the questions list in the quiz - See Creating Question Groups.
- Deleting or adding answer options to quiz questions that have already been answered by students does not give you the option to regrade those questions.
Regrading Options
When you change the correct answer of a quiz question, Canvas will provide you with up to 4 options for regrading, depending on the question type (Multiple Choice and True/False have options 1-4; Multiple Answers have options 2-4 shown below):
-
Award points for both corrected and previously correct answers (no scores will be reduced): This option is most commonly used if a quiz question was too confusing, if there were several correct answers, or if the originally selected correct answer was incorrect. This option avoids penalizing students when you change the correct answer selection.
-
Only award points for the correct answer (some students’ scores may be reduced): This option is used if an incorrect answer was originally marked as the correct answer. By selecting this option, you will give credit only to the students who selected the answer which is actually correct.
-
Give everyone full credit for this question: This option will give every student that has taken the quiz, whether they have answered correctly or incorrectly, full credit on the question.
-
Update question without regrading: This option is most commonly selected if you are wanting to improve or make changes on a question or answers for future quiz. By selecting this option you can update the correct answer for the question without regrading students who have already taken the quiz.
