MS OneDrive: OneDrive Scanning Tool
Microsoft OneDrive Scanning Tool
The Microsoft OneDrive mobile app allows students, faculty, or staff with a UBC account to scan images from their mobile device and automatically converts them to PDF files. Scanned images are stored in Microsoft OneDrive. Microsoft OneDrive is FIPPA compliant and data is stored in Canada.
This tool is useful when students need to scan completed assignments and exams then upload them to Canvas.
Follow these steps to use the scanner tool:
- Download the Microsoft OneDrive mobile application from the App Store Links to an external site. or Google Play Links to an external site..
- Open the OneDrive application. The first time you open the app you will need to sign in. Sign in with your firstname.lastname@ubc.ca email address. Students sign in with their cwl@ubc.ca email address.
- Select Files from the bottom menu. Select or create the folder you would like to upload your scan to.
- Tap on the camera icon on the bottom-right of the screen.
- For the first time, you may need to accept OneDrive's permissions to use your mobile device's folder and camera.
- When the page changes to the camera style, select Document (the default option) at the bottom of the screen.
- The camera will try to detect the page with a blue-outline that is trying to find the document.
- Tap the white circle to take the photo.
- A cropped image of your document page will appear. You can do some basic editing here, such as cropping or rotating the image.
- Once you are satisfied with the photo, you may tap the + icon on the left corner button to add an additional page. Continue this process until all photos of the document are taken.
- From the camera page, tap the > button to view all images scanned so far. The number indicates how many pages have been scanned.
- Tap Done when finished taking photos.
- Provide a name to the scanned images file.
- Specify the folder to save in. By default, it will select the folder you started in on step 3 above.
- Click on the checkmark at the top right corner to save the file and sync it to the OneDrive cloud.
- If you have set up OneDrive set to sync with your computer, the file will automatically download from the cloud to your computer. If you do not have it set up to sync, log on to office.com and select the OneDrive icon. Select the folder that you uploaded the file to. To download the file, hover the mouse cursor over the file name, click on the three dots then click Download. You will now be able to upload the file to Canvas from your computer.
