When you create a quiz in Canvas, you are presented with two Quiz Engine options: Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. Which one should you choose?
At this time, the CTL recommends that you select Classic Quizzes. Although New Quizzes offers some new features, it also lacks features of Classic Quizzes upon which many instructors depend. Please see Canvas: New Quizzes vs. Classic Quizzes to learn more.
Navigate to the Quizzes module in your Canvas course menu.
At the top right of the window and select +Quiz.
A pop-up menu will appear with two quiz options. Select New Quizzes (a) and then select Submit (b) in the bottom right corner.
An assignment page will appear where you can fill in the Quiz details such as the Quiz name (labeled "Assignment Name" on this page), how many points it is worth, the Assignment Group, the number of allowed Submission Attempts and the Assign to details (who is assigned, as well as the availability and due dates). It is important to enter a Points value here; the value entered in the Points field will be the total possible points in the Gradebook. Please note: in the Submission Type section, the submission type must remain as an “External Tool”. It is also locked when filling in the assignment details so it is unable to be changed. Once you have finished filling in the assignment details, scroll down slightly to the bottom right and select Save or Save & Publish.
The New Quizzes Build page will display. Here you can:
Edit the Quiz Title (previously set on the Assignment page of step 4 above) and add quiz instructions. Note that if you change your Title here within the Build page it will not update the title in the Quiz section of your Canvas course.
View Item Banks (these are similar to Classic Quiz Question Banks).
Align course-level and account-level outcomes with the assessment.
Preview a student view of the assessment.
Navigate through the assessment.
Add questions.
To return to the Quizzes section of your course, click on Return at the top right corner.
