Canvas: Moderate a New Quiz

Access the Moderate Quiz Page

1. In your Canvas course, click the quiz name to open the New Quizzes Build page.
2. At the top of the Build page that opens, click on Moderate.
   The Moderate page will display with a list of students.
   
   
   
3.  Click Show All.
   A drop-down menu will offer you filter options. For example, you can display just the Attempts in Progress.
   
   
   
4. When students begin the quiz, stay in the Moderate page and see students' status under Log change to In Progress. Once students submit the quiz, their status changes to View log.
   

Add Attempts or Extra Time

In the case where a student has used up all attempts available, you can give that student extra attempts. You also have the option to give the student extra time.

Note that if you add extra time to an attempt, regardless of how much time you allocate for the student, the quiz will auto-submit at the "available until" time set in the quiz details if that date & time passes while the student is writing the quiz.

1. Scroll down to locate a student in your class list, or use the search box to search for their name.
2. To add an attempt or extra time to one student, to the right of the student's name, click Moderate.
   
   
   
3. A side panel will appear. With the quiz attempt in progress, your options are:
   1. Allow Additional Attempts. In this example, one additional attempt has been added.
      
      
      
   2. Adjust Time. You can give a set amount of additional time, or remove the time limit. In the example here, an additional 30 minutes has been granted.
      
      
      
4. Click the x at the top of the side panel to save changes and collapse the panel. The list of students will appear again.
   1. If you added an additional attempt, the total number of possible attempts will increase, as shown here:
      
      
      
   2. If you added additional time, the extra time will display in the Accommodations column:
      
      
      
      

Reopen a Submitted Quiz

If a student accidentally submits their quiz before completing the attempt you can reopen the quiz and allow them to continue on the same attempt. This will load all answers that the student had previously submitted and allow them to modify their answers.

Note that you can only reopen an attempt if the student did not use up the time limit and the Available Until time has not passed.

1. To reopen an an attempt, find the student in the list and and on the right in the same row as the student's name, click Moderate
   
   
   
2. A side panel will appear. Click Reopen.
   
   
   
3. A warning will pop up. In the popup, click Reopen.
   
   
   
4. After reopening the attempt, the quiz log for the student will display as "In Progress", and the score and time values will display as blank. The student may now return to the quiz page, click resume, and re enter the quiz attempt.
