When you create a quiz in Canvas, you are presented with two Quiz Engine options: Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. At this time, the CTL recommends that you select Classic Quizzes. New Quizzes offers some new features, but it lacks features of Classic Quizzes upon which many instructors depend. Please see Canvas: New Quizzes vs. Classic Quizzes to learn more.
You can adjust New Quizzes settings to control what students are able to see after submitting their quiz. Firstly, please note that, with New Quizzes, a Manual Grade Posting Policy does not automatically block students from seeing their quiz results, so students may be able to see their quiz grades before you manually release them depending on your quiz settings discussed below. Also, Restrict student result view does not restrict students from seeing their grade in the gradebook - make sure to also set a manual grade posting policy for the New Quiz assignment in the gradebook. See How to set Grade Policy to Hide Grades.
The settings for determining what students can see of their quiz results are found by going into you New Quiz, clicking the Settings tab, and scrolling down to Restrict student result view.
There are 6 scenarios for what students will be able to see upon submitting their quiz, the first of which gives students an unrestricted view of quiz results:
1. Default: "Restrict student result view" is NOT selected
If "Restrict student result of view" is NOT selected in the quiz settings, then students will see their full quiz results upon submission of their quiz. This includes their total grade, grade for each question, and item feedback. The questions will be shown with their own responses, and each one will be marked as correct or incorrect. Incorrect answers will show which answer was correct below them.
Student view of results:
If "Restrict student result view" IS selected, then the following options can be turned on sequentially:
2. "Restrict student result view" IS selected, but none of the options below it are selected
If "Restrict student result of view" is turned on, but everything below it is left unselected, then students will see the most restricted version of their quiz results upon submission. They will only see a confirmation that their quiz was successfully submitted and a note that results are not displayed per instructor settings.
Student view of results:
3. "Show items and questions" IS selected, but none of the options below it are selected
By restricting student result view and selecting only "Show items and questions", after submission of their quiz, students will be able to see all of the quiz questions and the possible answers for each of them. However, they will not be able to see their own answers to each question, nor any information pertaining to which answers are correct or incorrect. Therefore it is like viewing a blank version of the quiz. Note: with "Show items and questions" selected, if "Show points awarded" is also selected then students will be able to see how many points they earned for each question and may therefore be able to determine which questions they answered correctly and incorrectly.
Student view of results:
4. "Show items and questions" IS selected and "Show student response" IS selected, but none of the options below it are selected
In this scenario, students are able to see every question, the possible answers, and their own response to that question. This applies to all question types. However, they are unable to see anything pertaining to which answers are correct or incorrect. Note: with "Show items and questions" selected, if "Show points awarded" is also selected then students will be able to see how many points they earned for each question and may therefore be able to determine which questions they answered correctly and incorrectly.
Student view of results:
5. "Show items and questions" IS selected and "Indicate response as correct/incorrect" IS selected, but "Show correct answer with incorrect response" is NOT selected
In this scenario, students are able to see every question, the possible answers, and their own response to that question. Each question will be marked as either "Correct" or "Incorrect", but questions that were answered incorrectly will not reveal which answer was the correct one.
Student view of results:
6. "Show items and questions" IS selected and "Show correct answer with incorrect response" IS selected
In this scenario, students are able to see every question, the possible answers, and their own response to that question. Each question will be marked as either "Correct" or "Incorrect", and any incorrect answers will show the correct answer below them.
Student view of results:
The remaining settings function independently from the above scenarios:
7. Showing and Hiding points with "Show points awarded" and "Show points possible"
These two settings control how students see points on a quiz, and function mostly independently from the other settings. If selected, these options show information at the top of the results page. These options do not affect what is shown in the gradebook, which is controlled independently.
If only "Show points awarded" is selected, then student will be able to see how many points they earned on the quiz, but not what the quiz was out of.
If only "Show points possible" is selected, then student will be able to see the total points possible for the quiz, but not what their score was.
Note: if both options are selected, then students will see a percent grade, the points they earned, and the total possible points (i.e. 1 out of 2 points).
If "Show items and questions" is selected in addition to the options described above, then information about points awarded/possible is also shown for each individual question (i.e. every question will show how many points were awarded and/or were possible for that question).
8. "Show items and questions" IS selected and "Show item feedback" IS selected
Selecting the "Show item feedback" option allows students to see any automatic feedback that you entered into your quiz questions when constructing them. For example, if you entered feedback to appear when students answered question 1 incorrectly, they would be able to see it when this option is selected. General feedback will be visible as long as "Show item feedback" is selected, but feedback based on the accuracy of students' answers will only be visible if "Indicate response as correct/incorrect" is also selected.
