Canvas: Creating a Quiz with Classic Quizzes
Creating a Quiz with Classic Quizzes
When you create a quiz in Canvas, you are presented with two Quiz Engine options: Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. The CTL recommends that you use Classic Quizzes at this time.
Create a Classic Quiz
- Navigate to the Quizzes module in your Canvas course menu.
- At the top right of the window and select +Quiz.
- In the pop-up menu that appears:
- Click Classic Quizzes.
- At bottom right of the popup, click Submit.
- The quiz details page will open in which you can fill in the following:
- Quiz name
- Quiz instructions and description
- Quiz Type: Graded Quiz will list in the gradebook; Practice Quiz will not be included in the gradebook. You can also select Graded or Ungraded Survey.
- Assignment Group. Where the quiz will list in Assignments.
- Shuffle answers. This randomly orders the distractors for Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers, and Match.
- Time limit. This automatically submits the quiz if time runs out
- Allow Multiple Attempts. By default it is one attempt, but you can set it to a number or unlimited.
- Let students see their results. You can override this by following the instructions to set the Grade Policy to Manual
- Show one question at a time. By default all questions list on one page.
- Require an access code. This blocks the quiz from students until you give them the password to open and begin the quiz.
- Filter IP Addresses. This is not used.
- Enable Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor. See Proctorio instructions.
- Assign to. By default it is Everyone, but you can replace that with individual names for a specific due date, available from and until dates.
- +Add. Click this to Assign to specific students for another set of available dates.
- When finished entering these settings, click Save or Save & Publish.
The Classic Quiz will list in Quizzes and in Assignments, but it has no questions or points until you open the quiz again and add them.

- In the quiz details page that opens, beside Details, click the Questions tab.
- In the questions page that opens, scroll to the bottom and you will see that you can click:

See Classic Quiz Question Types.
- + New Question group to create a section in the quiz to which you add questions from a Question Bank. See Creating Question Groups.
- Find Questions to open the course Question Bank and select questions to add to the quiz.
- When you have added questions to the quiz, move your mouse pointer over a question and you can:
- Drag the question by the 8 dots at left of the question name to reorder the questions.
- Click the pencil icon to edit the question. The question expands to edit mode and you can edit text and images, and the points for the question. When finished, scroll down and click Update Question to save the changes to that question.
- Delete the question by clicking on the x.
- Once you have finished adding and editing questions, scroll down and click Save.
The quiz summary page that appears will list the number of questions and the total points possible. - If you are satisfied that you have set the proper Quiz details such as Available from date, at the top of the quiz summary page, click Publish.
- The quiz will list for students, but be locked until the Available from date that you set. If you required a password for the quiz, that will also block students from opening the quiz until you give them the password.
