Canvas: Creating a Calendar Due Date with a "Not Graded" Assignment
Creating a Calendar Due Date with a "Not Graded" Assignment
When you use an external tool such as iPeer or publisher's tool for an assignment, students do not see a Due Date for it in the Canvas Calendar. If you want just the Due Date in the Calendar and not a grade column, the preferred method* is to create a "Not Graded" Assignment as follows:
- In the course menu of your Canvas course, click Assignments.
- At top right of the page, click +Assignment. (You can also add a new assignment by clicking the + sign to the right of a specific Assignment Group heading [A]).
-
In the page that appears, enter the Assignment Name.
-
In the instructions text area, enter detailed instructions for this “Not Graded” external tool assignment. Include a link to the external tool for students to access and complete the assignment.
-
Choose an Assignment Group from the drop-down menu.
-
Beside Display Grade as, select the option Not Graded from the drop-down menu.
-
Next to Assign, specify who this assignment is for, and fill in the due dates and availability dates for this assignment.
-
When finished, at bottom click Save and Publish.
NOTE: Please make sure these due dates and availability dates MATCH the dates for the iPeer Event or other external tool assignment you have created.
After you have created and published the "Not Graded" assignment for your iPeer evaluation event, students will be able to see this assignment on their Canvas Course Calendar and their To Do Lists as shown below:

* Using Canvas announcements to notify students about the upcoming iPeer Event is good practice, however, there is the possibility of not all students viewing the announcement. By creating an assignment for this iPeer Evaluation Event that is “Not Graded”, it is a more informative way to notify students to view and complete the evaluation. A "Not Graded" assignment ensures that students will see the assignment with its detailed instructions, and will know its availability and due dates from within Canvas. By having an assignment rather than an announcement, students are more likely to navigate to iPeer and properly complete the Evaluation before the due date.
