- Add Attempts or Extra Time for the Next Attempt
- Extending Live Quiz Time
Access the Moderate Quiz Page
- In your Canvas course, navigate to your quiz that you wish to edit. Note that your quiz must be published in order to access the Moderate Quiz page.
- Click on Moderate This Quiz found on the Related Items list (top right, or bottom of the screen).
- The Moderate Quiz page will display with a list of students.
Add Attempts or Extra Time for the Next Attempt
In the case where a student has used up all attempts available (for example, the quiz is set to only allow one attempt, but the student accidentally submitted the quiz without completing it), you can allocate extra attempts. In some cases you may wish to give a student extra time - the option shown here is only to be set BEFORE the student starts writing the quiz. See the Extending Live Quiz Time tab for instructions on how to provide extra time to a student writing a quiz in progress. Note that if you add extra time to an attempt, regardless of how much time you allocate for the student, the quiz will auto-submit at the "available until" time set in the quiz details if that date & time passes while the student is writing the quiz.
- To locate a student in your class list, you can search for their name in the search box.
- To add an attempt or extra time to one student, find the student in the list and click the pencil icon found on the same row as the student's name.
- To add an attempt or extra time to multiple students, check the checkbox next to all the students' names that you wish to edit (note: you can use the checkbox at the top of the list to select all).
- When adding an attempt or extra time to multiple students, select the Change Extensions link at the bottom of the list.
- In the pop-up, type how many total extra attempts you would like to give the student(s). For example, if only one attempt is initially given, type "1" to give the specified students another attempt.
- If your quiz is timed, you can give extra time on the next attempt. Enter a number (in minutes) for the extra time allocation. This value will be added to the default time limit. In this example, the original time limit was 180 minutes (see the grey text under "Extra time on every attempt"), so the total time allocation will be 210 minutes after adding 30 minutes of extra time. It is extremely important to note that adding time in this manner will NOT extend an in progress attempt!
- If the current date is past the availability date set in the quiz, then check off Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt. This will allow the student(s) to do the quiz even if it is closed.
- Click Save to apply the changes.
- The list of students will display. It is now updated with with the extensions shown - for example, even though Student 1 shown below has already completed 1 Attempt, they now have 1 Attempt Left (A), and the extra time allocation is noted under their name (B).
Extending Live Quiz Time
In the case where you have set up a timed quiz and would like to extend the "countdown timer" that a student can write the exam for, you can extend a quiz in progress. Note that you can only extend this time if it will not extend the student's writing time past the "available until" date/time originally set in the quiz details. For example, if your time limit is set for 60 minutes and you have made the available time window to only be 60 minutes long, the quiz will auto submit at the "available until" time, even if there is time left on the timer. Note: If you edit the available until time while a quiz is in progress, it will not take effect unless a new attempt is started.- Find the student that you wish to extend the time to complete the quiz and click on the blue clock icon in the Time column. The timer is shown counting down, and indicates how much time the student currently has left to complete the quiz. Note that extending a live quiz time can only be done one student at a time.
- In the pop-up, enter the time in minutes that you would like to extend the quiz for, then select your extension option. You have two extension options:
- End the quiz ___ minutes from now: end the quiz some minutes from the current time. Note, it is possible to give a student less time by selecting the now option and giving a time less than the remaining time to end the quiz.
- End the quiz ___ minutes from the current end time. This option will maintain the original time limit, and add on the number of minutes entered here.
- Click Extend Time. Important: as noted above, if the extended time limit takes the student beyond the Available until time, the quiz will auto-submit at the Available until time rather than allowing the student to complete the full allocated time limit.
- After extending the time, the time listed for the student will show the increased available time.
