Canvas: New Quizzes Settings
New Quizzes Settings
New Quizzes is an alternate quiz engine to Classic Quizzes, the following are the options available to you for how the assessment is delivered to students. There are the basic settings common to most assessments, and then there are New Quizzes settings found through the Build page of New Quizzes.
At this time, the CTL recommends that you select Classic Quizzes. Although New Quizzes offers some new features, it also lacks features of Classic Quizzes upon which many instructors depend. Please see Canvas: New Quizzes vs. Classic Quizzes to learn more.
You can edit the basic quiz settings as follows:
- In your course menu, select Quizzes.
- On the Quizzes page, at the top right, click +Quiz.
- In the quiz engine pop-up that appears, select New Quizzes, and then click Submit.
- The assignment settings page appears on which you can set:
- The name for your New Quizzes quiz.
- The total points that the quiz will be worth in the gradebook.
- The assignment group.

- Select whether to exclude this assessment from the final grade calculations.

If this is not selected, the questions will be displayed in the order that you list them on the Build page. -

By default, all questions are shown on one page and students can only advance to the next question.
To allow students to go to previous questions, select the Allow Backtracking checkbox. -

This is option is intended for in-person exams. We do not recommend this for online remote exams. - Time limit: enable this setting to limit the amount of time a student can write the quiz for. Enter the time limit using the Hours and Minutes fields.
- Filter IP addresses: this setting is not recommended; it is intended for an in-person examination.
