Kaltura: Upload Video to Canvas using My Media
Upload Video to Canvas using My Media
Always Upload Videos to My Media
Kaltura is a media streaming platform for instructors and students to record and share audio and video content. Kaltura features include the ability to upload, publish, and search videos, embed video directly in a Canvas course (that can be reused across multiple courses), and create shortened clips from existing video content. Kaltura is available in Canvas through the My Media and Media Gallery links on the course sidebar. You can record video using Kaltura Capture, or upload your own audio or video files. And you have unlimited disk space when you upload using Kaltura, so you don't need to worry about running out of space in your course!DO NOT Upload to Files
Video and audio media uploaded to Canvas should not be uploaded to the Files section of your course. Canvas is not meant to be a media streaming service, so every time you upload a large media file to Files, and every time a student accesses one of those files, the system is "stressed", thereby decreasing processing speed for ALL Canvas users. How to Upload Videos to My Media
- In your Canvas course, click My Media. (If you do not see My Media, please view Kaltura: Getting Started). Select Add New.
- In the drop-down list that appears, click Media Upload.
- Drag and drop a file from your computer into the designated area, or select a file using the Choose a File to Upload button.
- The file will begin to upload. When complete, a notice will appear indicating that the upload has been completed. Add your video name and description.
-
Scroll down to Copyright Permissions and click Select a value. If the video is your own creation, select With the Permission of the Copyright Holder(s). You will not be able to share your video until you have set the Copyright Permissions.
- Scroll down and Save. You will not be able to publish until after you have saved the Copyright selection.
- The page will reload with a notice that your changes have been saved. Scroll to the Publishing Schedule (under the Copyright Permissions section).
- Select your publishing schedule - once published, it can be always visible, or only visible for a specific time frame.
- To share the video with your students, you need to change the selection from Private to Published.
- Select the course to publish the video to. You can publish to one or more courses.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and Save.
Publish a Private Video
- Go to My Media.
- If your video has a green Published tag, then it has been published to your Media Gallery, and can be shared with students (i.e. through a Page in a Module).
- If your page has a Private notice across the bottom, it has not been shared with students. Click on the video image or name.
- The video page will come up. Scroll to below the video, and select Publish from the Actions drop-down menu.
- Change the selection from Private to Published, select the course to publish in, and click Save.
