Module III Introduction

Content

Introduction

This module will introduce how several different types of remote sensing technologies work. As we compare and contrast the different types of resolutions, sensors and orbits keep in mind which specifications you might want to choose when obtaining data to answer different forest management questions. A lot of the time there is no perfect answer, because there are pros and cons to each choice. At the minimum, be able to make a logical choice and back it up by comparing with other options.

Outcomes

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Define, compare and contrast different resolutions.
  • Explain the concept of orbits and different types of orbits.
  • Describe the types of scanners and explain the difference between active and passive sensors.
  • Discuss current common sensors as well as new technologies and how they can be applied.
  • Explain RADAR, LiDAR and some of their applications.
