Conducting an integrative ecosystem services assessment involve different stakeholders who would be affected by the process. How ecosystem services translate to the values dictated or expected by the market, the government, and the consumers are important to be considered. This topic shows examples on how ecosystem services could be valued in such categories.
By the end of this topic, you should be able to:
Describe market-value approaches.
Differentiate opportunity cost from the production function approach.
Enumerate and explain the two types of human value approaches.
Explain how the market, human, and government values affect one another in an integrative ecosystem services assessment.

Topic Summary
This topic introduced how ecosystem services are accounted in terms of the values ascribed to it by the market, the government, and the consumers. It discussed the difference between opportunity cost and and production function approach of the market-based valuing of ecosystem services. Likewise, it also differentiated the revealed preference value from the consumers’ stated preference value. This will all be considered when the local government assesses different ecosystem services in a community.
Topic Self-review (Optional)
Use the following self-reflection questions as study guide to conduct your self-review for the topic.
How does your consuming pattern of a particular ecosystem service (e.g., water, tourism, and recreation) affect other peoples’ consumption of the same service?
How does the rise of new establishment (e.g., malls and restaurants) in your community affect other forms of ecosystem services that you utilize on a personal or household level?
