By the end of this course students will be acquainted with the complex international regime that impact forestry as well as the role of sustainable forest management (SFM) in global development and environment agendas. The course will create a common foundation and provide appropriate knowledge for those who are already, or plan to be, involved in international natural resources management with particular emphasis on forestry activities.
Through a discussion of contemporary global forest issues and future trends, students will be informed about the importance of the sector in achieving related global agreements and conventions. The mandates and activities of inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations dealing with international environmental, economic, and social forestry issues will be outlined with a focus on organizations associated with the United Nations, as well as other global and regional development and research bodies.
Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
Discuss the characteristics of forestry issues under discussion internationally and their relations to global environmental and development agendas.
Give examples of the intergovernmental organizations related to forestry.
Recognize the global conventions and processes related to SFM.
Value the international forestry diplomacy and negotiation tactics of global agreements and practice the alignment of national policies with international obligations to implement SFM.
Investigate the developments in the international forestry dialogue and foresee its future developments.
