Topic Introduction

The UN General Assembly adopted the Non-legally Binding Instrument (NLBI) on Forests in 2007. At UNFF 11 (2015) the Forum adopted a new name: The United Nations Forest Instrument (UNFI). It recognizes SFM as a dynamic and evolving concept, which aims to maintain and enhance the economic, social and environmental values of all types of forests, for the benefit of present and future generations. That was followed by adopting the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030 (UNSPF 2017-2030).

The PPT and lecture of Topic 3.3 will present the chronology of developing the UNSPF 2017-2030 and its Global Objectives on Forests which are supposed to guide the work of UN agencies and beyond for the next decade.

By the end of this topic, you should be able to:

  • Value the evolution of the international arrangements on forests.
  • Appraise the characteristics of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030 (UNSPF 2030) and its Global Objectives on Forests (GOF).
  • Support the steps proposed to implement the six GOF.
