Introduction

International instruments and agreements are frequently needed for the articulation of general principles and frameworks for action to address global specific problems under the preview of these instruments. They call for specific national level actions, such as the enactment of national laws and regulations as well as implementation strategies.

As most of the information and teaching in the fields of diplomacy and negotiation deal generally with political issues, Module 4 put available knowledge in forestry perspectives due to the special nature of this sector. The practical experience of the Instructor as an observer and often practitioner of international forestry negotiator for over 40 years are shared with the students.

This Module presents information on Forest Diplomacy and the art and practice of negotiating international agreements. It will also discuss other common provisions of such instruments that may include international cooperation, monitoring and reporting, research, exchange of information, dispute resolution processes and coordination among related agreements.

Outcomes

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Recall how intergovernmental agreements are formulated.
  • Practice the international diplomacy regulating negotiation.
  • Identify the types of multi-lateral agreements.
  • Value the general principles governing the forestry negotiation process, negotiation in practice, and forestry diplomacy.
