Checklist before going out to play

  • Check the weather links which includes:
    • Checking the UV Index report (Apply sunblock to avoid getting sunburnt).
    • Checking the wind report - find out the wind speed and direction (If it’s too windy, you’d likely be fighting the wind rather than concentrating on performance and it will ruin your game!).
    • Check the precipitation report (If it rains, it might be too dangerous to play as the ground will get wet and slippery).
    • Check the temperature and humidity (Hot and humid weather conditions are considered  very “heavy” and should be prepared accordingly).
  • Dress in accordance to the weather conditions (Layering is best as temperatures can fluctuate).

You should postpone your game plans if there are any weather warnings such as heavy rainfall, strong wind, or high heat conditions. You MUST put off your game if there are any alerts about  potential natural disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes.

Note that while forecasts can help predict and warn you of the potential weather conditions, there are still times where the weather can be unpredictable. If you have access to a camera footage of the particular court you are going to play at or if you are able to ask someone else at the location, it is definitely wise to do a cross check just to ensure that everything is going according to plan.

I have personally had the experience where my tennis games was started in lovely, sunny weather conditions only to experience heavy downpour just moments after. Likewise, many of my matches were cancelled as the skies looked really cloudy and dark but it ended up never raining at all. Hence, in conclusion, accurate interpretations of the weather are extremely important in helping us make better and informed decisions.
