1. Food and Water

It is very important to stay hydrated and energized especially on longer, more strenuous hikes. Dehydration is a top hazard for hikers and it is necessary to be fully prepared for the weather and temperature. Carry a few granola or energy bars with you for fuel and be sure to fill up on water or have a water filtration bottle so you can fill up during your trip.

2. Safety Equipment/First Aid

In the case of an emergency such as minor slips and falls, having a first aid kit is essential for temporarily treating any wounds or problems that may occur on your trip. Since you will be far from civilization it is important to have these things with you.

Eye protection and sunscreen will shield you from the suns harmful UV rays especially if you are going to be exposed for extended periods of time.

Depending on the climate you definitely do not want to forget about things such as snow poles, snowshoes and trail markers just in case you want to backtrack.

3. Cell Phone or other Communication Device

In the case of an emergency, it is important that if you have cell service you are able to call for help right away. It is also great for taking photos so you can show those that missed out. Say Cheese!

4. Appropriate Clothing

Dressing for the weather is another critical step as temperatures and weather can change in the blink of an eye it is best to layer or pack extra clothing as necessary.

There is a popular Norwegian saying that holds true, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” Hikers and snowshoers, in particular, should plan well for every possible scenario. Dressing in layers will help you adjust to various temperatures and forget your cotton clothes because they will poorly wick away moisture.

5. Plan Your Trip Ahead of Time

Hiking is an activity that may often require some ahead of time planning. Decide amongst your pack which hike best suits your experience levels and time allotment for the day. You don't want to be caught hiking in the dark so make sure you know sunrise and sunset times and how long your trip will take. 6. Check the Weather Forecast

It is a smart idea to be informed on what the weather will be like as you plan your trip. You will want to avoid any severe storms or hazardous temperatures so choose days where there will be minimal precipitation or storms for most enjoyment!

7. Bring/Tell a  Friend

Always tell someone where you are going and how long you will be away for, the best option is to bring a friend with you on your trip to ensure maximum safety and fun!
