  1. As a novice hiker familiarize yourself with the hazards associated with hiking and in turn how to prepare for them. Refer to the Weather Hazard information page to begin.
  2. Plan out your hike: what trails are you taking, what are the landmarks associated with those routes, how much food should you pack, how much water should you pack, would camping be involved, etc. 
  3. Get to know your equipment: Familiarize yourself with using a compass and map and whatever GPS device you may bring along. 
  4. Weather forecasts: For backcountry hiking it is best to do research on the best times of year to do certain routes. Keep track of weather up to a week in advance to ensure conditions are ideal for hiking. In the 48 hour window before the hike, regularly check forecasts to ensure you are prepared for the predicted weather. 
  5. Packing: Based on the weather forecasts, prep for the predicted weather. Other essentials such as food, first aid kits, navigation systems, and anything else required for that specific hike should be packed. Based on the forecast, make sure to also prepare the appropriate clothing and shoes. 
  6. Finalize your hiking plan and notify a few people in case of an emergency.
