Checklist Before Takeoff

There are a number of things to consider before you initiate take-off. Some days, you very well may have to cancel flight, and remain inside the comfort of your home, an airport or a hotel as you wait for the bad weather to pass.

  • Check local weather maps. Use METAR to reveal the current surface weather observations made near your planned destination. It is also valuable to check future weather through TAFs to learn what to expect over the duration of the trip, especially if it is a long flight, as weather will change through the day and night.
  • Analyze forecasts to determine what clouds are like at your desired altitudes, and if thunderstorms are likely. This can be done with atmospheric soundings.
  • Communicate with Air Traffic Controllers and consider taking their advice before acting on your own judgement as they are able to see your planned route from the ground better than you are.
  • Make sure the airplane is travelling at a safe weight and is able to get enough lift for take-off. Luggage in a small aircraft should be well-balanced to reduce tipping on either end.
  • Ensure passengers are aware of all safety protocols and that you are flying in the proper conditions relative to what you've been trained in (VFR or IFR).
