Tip and Checklist

  1. Before assessing any weather conditions, ensure that your aircraft is ready for flight and is equipped with any first aid equipment if anything were to go wrong. Do pre-checks of the plane by visually assessing any physical obstructions in the interior and exterior of the aircraft.
  2. Check altimeter and, if applicable, for IFR pilots, assess if any instruments need replacement or repair by following any blinking indicators.
  3. Provide yourself with a flying window and check the weather at your desired destination at your estimated time of arrival and assess the current weather conditions. Be prepared for rain, snow and all possible weather incursions, as it is always better to be overprepared than underprepared.
  4. As flying takes a physical toll, it also takes a lot mentally, so while also being well-rested, ensure you are capable and relaxed enough to take on a flight where you must always be alert and ready for emergencies.
  5. Ensure that you have made the proper arrangements at your desired location by familiarizing yourself with their airports and landing rules. Also, report and check with your local aviator services about the current flying conditions and possible weather extremities.
  6.  Inform friends you are travelling, so they know about your absence and travels.
  7. Plan your route and keep note of emergency landings you can make on the way to your destination if the flight is long. Do not fly if you even have a sliver of doubt or belief the flight will be dangerous as a decision so small can make a big difference.
  8. During the flight, remain calm but alert, constantly check the aircraft's status, and assess the sky around you. For VFR pilots, follow your training, avoid clouds at all costs, and do not engage in flight conditions where you have reason to doubt yourself.
  9. And lastly, enjoy your flight! Take in the views and enjoy the peace and quiet of the sky.

If you can positively check all of these off, then your good to go! Enjoy your flight and safe travels friend :)
