VFR implies that the flight will take place with good visibility and away from any clouds. When flying in these conditions, a pilot spends 80%-90% of their time looking outside the aircraft, thus controlling the flight using only visual references.  The following are the specific values of visibility and clouds for Visual Meteorological Conditions Links to an external site.(VMC) specified by regulations.

  • Normal weather minimums needed to fly VFR at an airport are:

horizontal visibility of 3 statute miles or more

  • Ceiling(the altitude of the lowest overcast or broken cloud base):

1000 feet above the airport/ more than 3,000 ft above ground level

  • Visibility:

       more than 5 statute miles
