Ganz et al. Tool to Map the Power Landscape

Identify Shared Purpose

1.  What problem does the evidence encourage us to solve?

2.  How will the world change if we solve it? (What does this answer reveal about the K2A goal?)

Map the Power

3.  Who has the power to solve the problem and create the change we want to see?

4.  What is wanted by those with the power? (As you consider this question, consider why they have not already created the change).

Now that we know who has the power to make the change , we have to figure out what we have that they want.  But this is hard to answer before we really know:  who are we? To figure this out, consider the next questions.

5. Who has the greatest interest in the change called for by the evidence; greatest interest in achieving our goal?

6.  Who has the greatest interest in the status quo?

7.  Who is on the sidelines?

8.  What do answers 5-7 reveal about who is:

  • Our constituency (who are our people)?
  • Leaders within the constituency (which will likely include YOU if you are actually part of a real life K2A team)?
  • Our supporters?
  • Our competition?
  • Our opposition?
  • Those on the sideline?

Now  that we know who we are...

9.  What do we have that is wanted by those with the power to make the change?

10. How can get more of what is wanted by those with the power to make the change?  Or hinder them from getting what they want?

Why do we care about answering questions 1 to 10?

Because a K2A project is more likely to be successful if the K2A team can influence what is wanted by those with the power to make the change called for by the evidence, and then offering it to those with the power in return for their doing what the K2A team wants.
