3.3.b Tasmin's Story
In Queen Charlotte City on Haida Gwaii, both Family Doctors and Midwives provide maternity care. The hospital is a Level One hospital with no cesarean section capability.
Florence and Tom have chosen midwifery care for this pregnancy. Florence has spent a lot of time reflecting on her experience of her last pregnancy and birth and she has some different expectations this time.
Tasmin is the Midwife in Queen Charlotte City who is providing Florence primary maternity care. Tasmin carries her own caseload and usually has a low annual volume of clients. She enjoys being able to provide care to families that extends beyond 6 weeks postpartum, including an expanded scope of care to babies, and well woman care. Because of the lower number of maternity cases overall on the island, to maintain her competency and practice an expanded scope she occasionally has to travel off island for continuing education or short term locum practice opportunities in high volume settings.
