When Florence attended her first prenatal appointment with her midwife, Tasmin took a moment to explain to the couple how she works with other providers in the community.

In Queen Charlotte City, when a Doctor or Midwife has to be away – for continuing education, for instance – another provider assumes the caseload and covers call for the travelling person during that time.

Tasmin has an arrangement with Dr. Riann Botha, a Family Doctor who carries her own obstetric caseload and has been prepared to attends births both in hospital and home.  She has lived in Queen Charlotte City for the past 2 years. When they are taking responsibility for each other's caseload, Tasmin and Riann discuss every person and the birth plan. They have this arrangement to keep each other in the loop, to support team functioning, and to help ensure people's safety and satisfaction.

In response to Florence's questions about birthing at home and staying on island, Tasmin assures Florence that this is usually possible. She explains that everyone would contribute to making the decision about a change in birth place if it becomes were less feasible. Florence asks Tasmin when it would not be feasible and Tasmin provides some examples. This discussion puts some of Florence’s concerns at ease.
