4.6.c Barriers to Conflict Transformation
A 2014 special issue of Dynamics of Asymmetric Conflict explored a number of barriers to conflict transformation that can be applicable to the healthcare context (26). There are structural, strategic, as well as psychological barriers to reaching “win-win” partnerships. Also preventing effective conflict transformation are “relational barriers”, the foremost of which is incompatible visions for the future. Conflict is further perpetuated by unwillingness to acknowledge the rights of the other party.
In healthcare, common barriers to effective conflict transformation are (3):
- Lack of time
- Excessive workload
- People in positions of power (or in positions with less power)
- Avoiding confrontation for fear of causing emotional discomfort
