Overview
A concept map is a visual organizer that can enrich students’ understanding of a new concept. Concept maps are visual diagrams that outline the relationship between ideas and concepts. Concept maps have overlapping characteristics which include:
- a focus question
- topics or concepts in boxes or circles, and
- linking words to connect concepts.
They usually include concepts enclosed in a circle or box, cross-linked to show relationships with other concepts. The cross-links include linking words or phrases to describe the relationship between the two concepts.
How to complete this Assignment
Assessment in education is a big topic. For the purposes of this assignment, choose a topic that fits under the umbrella of assessment. Some possible topics to explore include:
- formative assessment
- summative assessment
- diagnostic assessment
- student portfolios
- open book exams
- annotated bibliographies
This is not an exhaustive list, there are many more topics to choose from with a little bit of research. Once you have selected a topic area and created a focus question, email your instructor at XXX before moving forward with your concept map. The due date for a topic and question is XXX.
Once you have narrowed your topic and come up with a question, complete the following steps:
- Model how to identify the major ideas or concepts presented in a selection of text as you read.
- Organize the ideas into categories. Your organization may change as you continue to read and add more information.
- Use lines or arrows on the map to represent how ideas are connected to one another, a particular category, and/or the main concept. Limit the amount of information on the map to avoid frustration.
Once you have completed your map, complete a short reflection (maximum 250 words) on the process and hand this in with your assignment.
