Overview
An infographic should be:
- focused - one single message; emphasize its significance to you;
- graphic - graphics and images tell the story (fewer than 800 words total);
- ordered - the sequence should be obvious; simple flow paths and cues should guide the reader.
Components of an Infographic
Infographics can be broken into these main components:
- Visual (colours and graphics)
- Content (data, statistics and/or facts)
- Knowledge (analysis or insight into the data)
How to complete this assignment
Create an infographic that talks about what Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is and the role it plays in education at the K-7 or 8-12 level. This assignment will help you to gain a better understanding of:
- social emotional learning
- The role it plays in education
- The benefits for students in exploring SEL as part of their day to day curriculum
The Process
Know your subject and do thorough research on your topic. Develop a story board for your infographic.
- Using the literature (i.e., journals and other professional resources) and reputable websites, gather information to include data, statistics,
and pertinent facts. - Plan the “Story” your Infographic will tell. Draw a rough sketch of the infographic. The infographic must have a beginning, middle, and end. Consider developing a concept map, flow diagram, to depict your infographic plan.
- Think Visual:
- Identify ways to convert text to images. Try to convert as much of your data and text into visual imagery
by using charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, flowcharts, and other elements. - Determine the desired look you are trying to achieve for your infographic. The visual approach you
want helps you determine the color scheme, font types, and structure. Keep things simple with only 2-3
fonts, sizes, and colors
- Identify ways to convert text to images. Try to convert as much of your data and text into visual imagery
- Go back and reconsider the important parts of SEL you want to share. Be sure that your analysis and insight into the
data are represented to tell the story so the intended message(s) are communicated. - Proofread and Refine. Double check the accuracy of your data and information as well as make sure there are no grammatical or typographical errors. Be sure to cite all sources.
